Benedetta Pompili – Ceramic & Social Designer in Amsterdam
Benedetta PompiliDesign research & ceramics

CV & studio detailsExploring the transformative potential of clay alongside other everyday materials such as limestone and textiles, my work approaches design as the construction of compositions that function as critical tools, carrying with them the layered complexities of their provenance(s).
Ceramics become a recurring ground for their ability to absorb the socio-political and cultural aspects embedded within it. Urban and industrial remnants recur in the work, drawn by their ambiguous past and circulation. Their incorporation is meant to amplify their uncertain status.
At the core of the work lies an interest in process as a form of knowledge. This extends beyond objects into the design of shared workspaces intendend as environments that support exchange and collaboration

Conversing with Matter represents a project of regenerative art as part of Artes de la Tierra, the new exhibition of Guggenheim Museum Bilbao about artistic practices exploring earth, ecology, and sustainability. Curated by Manuel Ciuraqui, the show proposed a cross view over the relations between art, the soil and ecosystems1, approaching the themes as carefully as the execution of the exhibition, applying only biodegradable materials from secondary resources for the installation means.
In the context of the show, Conversing with Matter proposes a journey into clay, exploring and researching local, traditional and unconventional resources to make. The set-up of the project was redesigned in dialogue with the architecture of the museum designed by Frank Gehry, characterised by curved titanium, limestone and glass surfaces. The original cargo structures, that have been transporting and showcasing the project since its beginnings, were re-adapted to design new archival shelvings and an expositive cabinet with a biodegradable material obtained from rice husks and in use as a red thread along the rest of the show.
